The Map Tool: Explore by Species
If you would like to look at one or more species profiles based on something other than spatial data (e.g. "all storm petrels" or some other taxonomic group), click on Explore by Species, or the binoculars icon.
You may find our Explore by Species Video Tutorial useful.
|The Results Table|
Here you are presented with a series of dropdown menus which will filter the database records according to the parameters you choose. You can filter by taxonomic group, IUCN status, by all known gear interactions, or by a particular type of gear. In order to select more than one type of gear, control-click on a PC or command-click on a Mac for each gear type.
Click submit query once your parameters are selected, or hit reset in order to clear all fields.
Keep in mind that common names vary. If you don't see the species you are interested in, try the scientific name, or a higher taxonomic level in order to locate the species. The complete list of species as treated in this database is available here.
The Results Table
From the onscreen table of results matching your query, you can generate reports similar to those produced through spatial queries. Click on the column headings to change the sort order of that particular column (a small black arrow in the column heading indicates which column is driving the sort). In the example below, IUCN status is the selected column.
In the 2 right hand columns, you can make selections which will alter the information displayed in any reports. Because these accounts, particularly those with lots of gear references, can become lengthy, you may wish to produce reports just for a selection of species, or turn off some range maps. Your Print Preview function can help you preview the volume of pages, and these checkboxes can help you manage the report.
- Include species: a checked box for a species will include the species in any subsequent Summary or Comprehensive Reports produced.
- Include Map: a checked box for a species will display the range map for a selected species in the species account in any subsequent Summary or Comprehensive Reports produced.
Once you have selected which species and maps you would like to include in your report, you can ask the tool to produce a report. At the bottom left of the species table you have two icons which enable you to produce reports (1) Summary Results Report and (2) Comprehensive Species Report.
Clicking on Create summary report opens a new tab and displays a list of all the species shown in the Results window with the same basic information.
Clicking on Create comprehensive report opens a new tab, and produces full accounts with range maps (if you selected them in the onscreen table) and all references. The Comprehensive Species Report includes foraging ecology, phenology, and behavioral information, as well as known interactions with specific gear types. For information on the precise definitions of the terms used, please see the Definitions page. For more information on interpreting your results, please see How to Interpret Results, or our Interpretation Video Tutorial.
From either the Summary or Comprehensive Report tabs, you can print using the small printer icon in the upper right, or through your browser.
** Caution: these accounts, particularly those with lots of gear references, can become lengthy (hundreds of pages), so please Print Preview or note the number of pages in your print dialog box if you are interested in having a hard copy. You may wish to print just the Summary Report and refer to the Comprehensive Report in an onscreen PDF.
